Jennifer Yao

Consultant Inhouse Consulting – US Office, Merck

My Job as Inhouse Consultant:

Since joining the company in early 2022, I have been involved in ~10 projects across different sectors and covering operation and strategy topics at various capacity. This diversity of projects keeps my job exciting and fun. In one of my projects, I supported the post-merger integration of a CDMO business, including the R&D and commercial integration and improving employee engagement. In addition, I have also worked on refining the pricing strategy of a prescription product in the U.S. market amid increasing competition. In another project, I backed the digital products launch in the life science area. Outside of the project work, I’m in charge of organizing some alumni events, revamping training content for the graduate programs, and mentoring graduates using an apprenticeship model.

My daily challenges:

The context and the problem keep evolving and changing every day. I like the new knowledge and challenges this role presents to me every time there is a new project. I also enjoy working closely with internal clients to solve the problem jointly and see the real impact on the business.

Why I like to work as Inhouse Consultant:

I enjoy learning new topics and knowledge. As an in-house consultant, I have the unique opportunity to work closely with a variety of different departments and teams within the company. This allows to gain a deep understanding of the company’s operations, culture, and goals, which can be incredibly valuable in helping to identify and address key business challenges. Additionally, working closely with internal clients helps to build trust and to benefit from lasting relationships whilst establishing yourself as a valuable resource for the company.

What I like most about being an Inhouse Consultant:

The freedom of choosing and shaping a project is one of my favorite aspects of being an inhouse consultant. This level of autonomy allows me to be creative in my approach to problem-solving and to come up with innovative solutions that add value to the company. Additionally, this freedom allows me to take ownership of my work and to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when a project is successfully completed. The resulting professional and personal development is a key motivator for me to give my best every day.

My life before joining the Inhouse Consultancy:

Before joining Merck IC, I was a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group in Dallas. I have worked on diverse topics, incl. spin-off support, corporate strategy, portfolio and pricing strategy, long-term transformation, and due diligence across retail, healthcare, biotech, and industry goods industries.

What I like to do in my spare time:

I recently picked up running. Running along the Mystic River in chilling winter is quite a unique experience.
