Richard Perrin

Project Manager, E.ON Inhouse Consulting GmbH

My Job as Inhouse Consultant:

Since joining E.ON Inhouse Consulting in August 2012 as Project Consultant, I have contributed to various projects across the E.ON Group through a wide range of activities: from business case development to workshop delivery; from in-depth research to project management; from financial analysis to stakeholder communications. In 2013 I had been promoted to Senior Project Consultant. Since 2015 I hold the position as Project Manager.
Alongside the day-to-day tasks, I also support university recruitment activities, our corporate social responsibility initiative and contribute to managing internal knowledge about innovation.

My daily challenges:

The diversity of our clients reflects E.ON’s presence along our core businesses (energy networks, customer solutions and renewables) as well as its international footprint. This diversity means that each new project offers a steep learning curve, with the client demanding top-quality management consultancy services. Alongside meeting the client’s own expectations, we also have a role in ensuring that the project outcomes are consistent with the Group’s wider interests.

Why I like to work as Inhouse Consultant:

As a newcomer to the energy sector, inhouse consulting gives me the opportunity to build up expertise across the energy value chain relatively quickly as well as continuously further developing my professional competences to a high level. It enables me to play a role in the sustainable energy transformation, by supporting different parts of E.ON to respond to the latest challenges, and at the same time offers a more attractive work-life balance than the external management consultancies.

What I like most about being an Inhouse Consultant:

I decided on inhouse consulting, because we have a license to challenge conventional thinking, but are also welcomed into client teams as a colleague rather than an outsider.
We are closer to the client’s issues which gives me the opportunity to learn about different aspects of the company. I can use the contextualised knowledge to develop better solutions that lead to more sustainable change.
Additionally the work environment is very dynamic (no routine!), open and stimulating. The diversity of my colleagues (with vast external consulting experience) means I have many opportunities to learn.

My life before joining the Inhouse Consultancy:

With degrees in Mathematics (University of Nottingham) and International Economics (Universiteit Maastricht), I spent a few years as a policy advisor in the UK government, before managing a sustainable supply chain program in West Africa. When I decided to change my career and work in the energy sector, the consultancy route made it possible for me to transfer existing skills and competences to a new challenge.

What I like to do in my spare time:

I am usually either participating in various sporting activities, travelling to new destinations or spending time with friends or family.
