Digital Hamburg S-Bahn

Project example

Piloting automated rail operations

With the “Digital Rail for Germany” Group program, state-of-the-art technologies will be used to completely reconceive rail operations, with a focus on automated driving. The new technologies are set to be used for the for the first time in the “Digital Hamburg S-Bahn” project, in which DB is cooperating with an industry partner and the City of Hamburg. The technology will be presented at the World Congress for Intelligent Transport Systems in 2021. This will pave the way for the rollout of automated driving.

Laying the basis for the rollout of automated rail operations

The DB MC team initially helped to create a feasibility study to define the key cornerstones of the project. Based on this, we managed the formation of an integrated project team consisting of staff from DB and an industry partner. We then supported the implementation, including the technological, legal and communication-related aspects of the project. At the same time, we used a concept study to show how automated driving can be rolled out across the S-Bahn network based on the pilot project.

The value we added

  • Designed and developed the pilot project to trial automated rail operations
  • Created an integrated project team with over 200 project participants
  • Supported communication both within the Group (top management and experts) and externally (policymakers and public)
  • Managed the project within the budget and on schedule
  • Laid the foundations for rolling out automated rail operations in Hamburg and beyond
