Sonali Jain

Management Consultant, BASF Management Consulting

My Job as Inhouse Consultant:

I joined BASF Management Consulting in fall 2019. Since then I have worked in diverse areas ranging from corporate venture, merger & acquisition (M&A), supply chain optimization as well as digitalization projects. Though I officially belong to the practice group called “Operating model and organizational development”, I have worked with almost all other practice groups thanks to our super flexible cross staffing policy.

My daily challenges:

In-house consulting requires the ability to multi-task, handle complex scenarios, do stakeholder management, deal with unfamiliar topics on routine basis. Though I am in Ludwigshafen, I work with clients around the world every day. This provides a great exposure as well as helps in developing a strong network worldwide.

Why I like to work as Inhouse Consultant:

Despite not having any prior external consulting experience, I am regularly offered opportunities that provides a fast-track for personal development. Training & skill development of all employees is the top priority of our department. The size and diversity of businesses within BASF means that the opportunities to learn & grow are infinite. Being an in-house consultant comes with a perk that you can try out different industries as well as roles before deciding your next move in the career within BASF. You discover & develop interests in things that you did not know existed and this is highly motivating for me.

What I like most about being an Inhouse Consultant:

What I like the most about in-house consulting is its culture. We enjoy a flat hierarchy in the organization. Moreover, the kind of trust and support that you get from your peers and supervisors is unreal. You are always encouraged to try things out of your comfort zone, you can always find someone who can help you in achieving those goals, which is helpful in personal development. Furthermore, a special thrust is given to our personal life as well. As an international employee, I am always supported by my supervisor to take up German language classes, which is not a priority for work but rather for social life.

My life before joining the Inhouse Consultancy:

Born and raised in India, I hold a bachelor’s degree in economics (hons). In fall 2015, I moved to France (Grenoble) to pursue MSc in innovation, strategy & entrepreneurship. After finishing masters, I joined a start-up in Paris that provides unconventional innovation consulting. This experience allowed me to understand different industries (beauty, food, pharma, technology…) as well as their innovation potential. This is what inspired me to make the next move in my career which brought me to BASF.

What I like to do in my spare time:

I like to spend my free time travelling around to visit family, friends, exploring Europe, experiencing different cuisines, culture and enjoying traditional architecture.
